Samson Kuvenguhwa is a Zimbabwean sculptor born in 1959. He is known for his abstract and figurative sculptures, which are often carved from serpentine stone. Kuvenguhwa's work is often inspired by his Shona heritage and the natural world around him.
Kuvenguhwa began sculpting at the age of 10, after being inspired by his grandfather, who was a blacksmith. In 1977, he joined Cannan Partson and formed his own group, 5 Km from Harare along Bulawayo road. This group is still operating today as Kubatana Craft Center. In 1980, Kuvenguhwa left his group and went back to his rural areas.
Kuvenguhwa's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, the African Art Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also won numerous awards for his work, including the Zimbabwe National Arts Council Award for Excellence in Sculpture in 1992 and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Award for Sculpture in 2002.
Kuvenguhwa is a highly respected figure in the Zimbabwean art world, and his work is considered to be some of the best contemporary sculpture from Zimbabwe. He is a master of his craft, and his sculptures are both beautiful and thought-provoking.
In addition to his work as a sculptor, Kuvenguhwa is also a teacher and mentor to other young artists. He is passionate about promoting Zimbabwean art and culture, and he is committed to helping the next generation of artists develop their skills and talents.
